Hinatuan Enchanted River Resort does not allow overnight campers nor offer night accommodations. Our group looked for a place to stay during the night in preparation for our next day trip, which is the famed Vanishing Island. Asking locals around the enchanted river, one stall owner pointed us to a nearby resort which was owned by her aunt and was the most accesible jump off to the Vanishing Islands. Some 20 minute ride hillside brought us to a coastal village called Talisay, where we parked our ride and rode a motorized banca towards this sandbar resort- C Fish Cage & Sand Bars Resort.

The front, docking side of the sandbar resort.Note the motorized bancas...

It was my first ever overnight stay on a resort “floating” on sea water. Actually it’s a sea sandbar that’s almost always submerged in shallow seawater during high tide. From the coastal village it’s another 20-30minute boat ride (around php50 per person one way) so it’s almost nigh time when we reached the place. Owned by the local government but managed by a private individual (whatever that means), this resort started its operations about a year ago. Made of wood, lumber and kalakat, it has piped in water system, it’s own electrical line and cozy rooms to accomodate visitors. Room accommodations are php 300 (2 persons), php600 (4 persons) and php 1,500 for family rooms.

So you might ask what activities can we do here? Since we arrived almost night time, and there’s a looming storm, here’s what we did:
Well for me, the grandest part of our stay in C-Fish Cage and Sand Bar Resort was this astounding sunrise view. Here, take a look this photo:
So if you’re stuck in Hinatuan and is planning to jump off to Vanishing Islands the next day, try C-Fish Cage & Sand Bars Resort . You may contact Lysil Toledo the manager at 09104303724/09154184550

There are two ways of reaching the fabled Hinatuan Enchanted River. If you don’t have your own vehicle, you can hire a habal-habal (an improvised passenger type motorcycle) from Hinatuan town proper to bring you to the river resort. Alone, this will cost you 200-250php so if you’re not a hurry, wait for more passengers (40php/head) to ride with a group going to Enchanted River.

Habal-habal ride (a mock up)

If you have your own vehicle (preferably a 4x 4), just follow the road signs leading to the river. There’s plentiful of that going to the Enchanted River. If you’re lost, the local folks is very friendly and can answer your queries for directions. Don’t get bored first timers and don’t get too excited. The long, winding, hill ride and rough roads seem so desolate and endless. There are several baranggay you’ll pass by so be ready to pay a road “toll” in each of these baranggays. When you encounter this nipa hut “floating” on a clear limestone river roadside, you’re on the right track. Hinatuan river is already nearby. You might want to stop over and get photos of this idyllic nipa huts.

Nipa hut over limestone river

There’s an entrance fee to the enchanted river resort and the cottages and tables are for rent. During weekend and holidays, the river is packed with tourists and visitors. Explore first the resort and plan out your adventure inside.

teaming with tourist, Enchanted River

There’s another river outlet system just a little farther the main swimming area where you can also swim .

the enchanting part for me, is this river outlet

If you have diving gears, the resort allows divers with gears to dive into an underground cave-water system connected with the river.

divers ready to dive at enchanted river

Of course if you’re an avid photo hobbyist, enchanted river offers a very nice subject or backdrop for a photoshoot.

The water is crystal blue at its deepest and is teaming with fishes during feeding time (lunch). An underwater camera is best for taking pictures in this crystal clear blue waters. As far as I know, there’s no overnight accommodations in the area so be sure you arrange for a place to stay in Hinatuan at night and leave the resort before dusk.

This is exactly what happened to us when we get there. We were all new to Surigao Del Sur and arrived at the place relying on the local folks for directions. Even if the resort is cramped with people, we enjoyed the cool, clear waters of Hinatuan Enchanted River. I like the place for a photoshoot. Sadly, our stay was too short to enjoy the place to the max! I hope this place will remain the same when I come back in the future.

Tinuy-an Falls is the top tourist attraction for Bislig City in Surigao Del Sur. Located in Burboanan, some 10 kms away in the southeastern part of Bislig, Tinuy-an holds the record of having the widest diameter (95 meters) among all the known falls here in the Philippines. Thus, Tinuy-an Falls was nicknamed the Niagara Falls of the Philippines. Blessed with crystal like waters and astounding beauty to match, it is but natural for travelers like me to get a glimpse of Tinuy-an Falls whenever and in anyway possible. It is on top of our “must-go-to-list-of places” in this trip.

The crystal clear, pristine, Tinuy-an Falls of Bislig City (photo from Wikipedia)

Previously, we made a brief stop at Bislig City “bayside, boardwalk to have some fun shoot. Sensing another storm is coming, we hurriedly left the city proper and headed south towards Tinuy-an Falls. The howling winds at the bay side plus the occasional flooded roads made us all worry about this trip to the falls. While on the road, we met people in a government owned vehicle warning us not to go ahead towards Tinuy-an because the roads are flooded. One van fully loaded with tourists also backed out even before reaching the place. None of us however, wanted to forgo the opportunity of seeing this falls. We invested time and effort in this road trip. We braved a storm and got wet in the rain, went through an accident, busted our tires, and we made it this far. We’ve traveled for days and since we are here already, we all agreed to go ahead, see the roads for ourselves and just turn back whenever we encounter road blocks. We knew exactly what we are expecting to see, and for the most part of it, this is all just to satisfy our curiosity. Turning back now seem to be not an option.

The road leading to Tinuy-an Falls is “unpolished”-rough, snakelike, narrow and on rainy days, muddy flooded. It was an image built entirely from “amazon stories”, creating both an excitement and fear for something unknown for first timers. We just knew something worth all these troubles is waiting for us to be discovered. The heavy rains and mud didn’t dampen our obsession to see this place. Whatever comes our view when we arrived there, we’ll take it face value. We can only hope against hope. Luckily, the flooded roads are really not that flooded or impassable. We made it to the foot of Tinuy-an Falls.

Just as expected, we arrived at the foot Tinuy-an Falls seeing the beauty in all of its inglorious state. Like seeing a lady in all her “harassed moments”.

In this state, this falls is far from its previous pictures depicting a pristine, crystal like and serene, curtain falls. The rushing and gushing, mud laden, swirling, chocolate brown waters falling from this falls is Tinuy-an on rainy, stormy days. But sensing the uniqueness of our trip (rare for tourist to see tinuy-an falls like this) we make do with what we have in front of us. So our camera’s got busy, despite the poor, hazy and drizzling weather. Take a look at theses photos.

Chocolaity Tinuyan Falls

huts were flooded...at Tinuy-an Falls

One thing I’m sure not going to do again, is going to this falls on rainy days. The sheer distance and the risks you have to conquer is not worth the the inglorious sight you’ll see. I’m not saying Tinuy-an Falls is not a beauty. I’m just saying it’s not at her best this time of the year. Ours, was a unique experience though, given that it may take some time before I could come back to this place. But there’s something we can brag about Tinuy-an Falls. That is seeing a chocolaity, Tinuy-an Falls on a rainy stormy days!

It was a hacked up plan that never went past the drafting stage. You just rush it up, to get it done. Nine people, one car, rainy days and unfamiliar destination. Disaster cooked in the most primitive ways, all in the name of fun. “Bahala na si batman”.

Travel tip: Know where you’re going, know the road, shortcuts, terrain etc. Get a (google) map!

Will someone tell me we're doing the right thing here???

For nine people (plus the compressed backpacks) cramped inside a 10 seater SUV, we were pretty reluctant to give up hope despite the horrendous weather, long drive and, ow, getting lost. Somehow, we were all confident we can get through this hack, having been into other numerous outdoor gigs that danced with danger.

Travel tip: Know the weather for the whole duration of your trip.

So at around 6pm that day, seven people (Me, Joy, Chris, Jah, Sir Joy, Gayle, Chucks) left Tacurong, on a journey none of us ever thought would be so full of surprises and what have they, only to find later on, that we enjoyed much to our hearts joy. Never mind the wet, hell, rocky, previously paved but now shitty road from Tacurong to Davao. Never mind the bullish rains, the one way traffic. After about 4 hours of forgettable travel, picking up Onin in Digos, we reached Davao in one piece. We temporarily stopped at a caltex station to gas up, get additional provisions and wait for Jocy (from bukidnon) to join us. She did come around 11 Pm and then the group started to travel for Surigao around 12 midnight.

If there’s one thing I can say about the road going to Surigao (passing by Tagum) from Davao, that’s “why the hell our roads back home so fugly?” It was almost an idle drive until our right rear tire hit something with a huge “kablag” and we all woke up panicking. It’s good Chris was quick enough to control the car and he slowly glided it to the side road and to change tyres. Then all sorts of trouble comes in and here the fun begins.

Travel tip: Ascertain the status (repairs, reroutes, diversions) of the road you expect to pass by.

“Our rear right tyre rim is broken. I have one spare tyre but I don’t have the tools to bring it down. To top it all its raining, and there’s no lighted building we can temporally take shelter! Did someone ate something so badly before we left??!! I quipped

After many unsuccessful attempts at tyre reserve dismantling, Onin called for help from one person we least expect to trouble at this ungodly hour. Erwin Emata, one of the first Pinoys to summit Mt. Everest. And yes, the first thing that came to our mind was

“pa picture tayo!!!wohooo!”

So we did.

Mr. Erwin Emata, (third from left, standing with blue shirt) one of the few first pinoys to summit Mt. Everest, came to our rescue (Photo by Anthony Guadalupe).

But then our spare tyre wouldn’t bulge a bit, even with the presence of Mr. Emata. So without much choice, we brave rain again and looked for other help. I was lucky i found trucks parked in a gas station a few yards away. And the drivers are all awake, watching us silently along the highway while we dumbly exhibited our unorthodox way of unchanging a tyre. I was able to convince three of these drivers to look at our spare tyre and bring with them their tyre stick. And they were able to untangle our tyres in a blink of an eye. So much for our ego of course. But we thanked the driver mechanic for the help. Then we got some photos again with Mr. Emata and thanked him too for coming in to our rescue. “Whew, that’ was awesome!”

Travel tip: Check and double check your car, spare tyres and basic fixing instruments before living your garage!

Just before dawn, we passed by the famed stopover going to Agusan and took our coffee break there. We really need to warm ourselves up because heavy rains poured endlessly. The coffee and bibingka there is fantastic. That and I’m beginning to feel exhausted of the long drive plus my allergic Rhinitis is acting up.

In San Francisco, Agusan which is the last stop before entering Surigao, I bought a spare tyre rim just so we’re still ready for any eventuality along the way. We left our broken tyre there and took up provisions before entering Surigao proper. Our next stop would be bislig city. On the way to Surigao we passed by this “mining” site. Just to let you know how flood “help” these people..

In Bislig we had our lunch in some carenderia, again had final check of our provisions and then proceeded to Tinuyan Falls. On the way we passed by the Bislig City’s seaside plaza and stopped there briefly for picture taking.

Team Budigurong!

Definitely storms is brewing somewhere and dark clouds loom over the horizon. Strong winds hammer the seaside plaza so we hurriedly left towards Tinuyan Falls.

Travel tip: Bring a lightweight, compact camera with you all the time. Never get caught in a situation where scenes like these pop up and you only have your hand as camera!

Next: Tinuy-Falls on a stormy day!

I bet most of you didn’t bothered to ask, if ever you saw one. Have you seen a gong being crafted? Yes, maybe. But have you seen a muslim artisan manually crafting a gong?A brassware? If not, you better see one in Cotabato city before such artistic and astute craftsmanship will forever be lost to curiosity.

Cotabato City is known for its Muslim culture and tradition. The oldest city in the south is home to numerous cultural gems. More than that, Cotabato City holds a few muslim craftsman and artists whose skills are deeply intertwined with culture and tradition and has been handed down through generations. One of these artistic gems is the brassware making community which produces gongs and metal crafts using the manual or traditional method of molding metal. All from designs and imprints handed down by their forefathers.

Clay mold

The process starts with the metalware design carved in a wax from the artist design concept. These wax designs are negative imprints of the craft that are molded over with clay. When I asked one artists who designs or who came up with the “blueprints”, he answered it was all handed down to them verbally and is stored in the brains of their “designers”. No written record whatsoever. Anyhow, the clay mold with the wax imprints is left to harden. Once the clay mold-imprint is hard already, the negative wax imprint is removed by heating and melting the wax. Then the clay mold is furthered refined and the “imperfections’ removed using the traditional sanding technique. The clay mold will then serve as the base mold for the brassware. With proper heating techniques and repeated manual sanding technique, the metalwares with decorative drawings are produced.

Personally I was amazed at how such gem has been artistically created, from design to finished product. Although somewhat rudimentary to many, this manual brassware making technique a class artistry of its own, given the skills and imaginative depth of the artisan behind any of this brass wares.

It is sad though that this community of artisans and craftsman is the only remaining manual brassware makers in Cotabato City.

So if you ever go to Cotabato City and is perhaps interested in this artists and their craft, go a take a visit at their place. See them in action and get awed by the artistry thats has been handed down for generations, orally. Contact Cotabato City’s local tourism office for inquiries on how to go to this place.

Guinakit Fluvial Parade is a re enactment of Shariff Kabunsuan‘s (an Arab- Malay missionary from Johore, Indonesia) arrival in Mindanao some 500 years ago in a Guinakit (convoy of bancas) along the banks of Masla Pulangi now Rio Grande de Mindanao. The arrival of Shariff Kabunsuan started the spread of Islam in the country. Guinakit Fluvial Parade is part of the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival celebrated every 19th of December by the people of Cotabato City.

A banca, part of the fleet or Guinakit

Guinakit is a large banca, made of wooden material and heavily decorated in colorful, traditional muslim garments and carrying musical instruments, actors and actresses on board personifying Shariff Kabunsuan and his fleet of missionary muslims. The Guinakit traverses the Rio Grande de Mindanao during the parade just like what Shariff Kabunsuan’s fleet did 500 years ago. All of the boats competing this year looked spectacular and colorful and the performers in it, totally captivating. Judging from the audience that came to view this parade, I’m pretty sure this was one celebration Cotabatenos (and Pinoys) shouldn’t miss.

Shariff Kabunsuan, a Asian-malay missionary from Jahore Indonesia, riding a Guinakit

On a personal level, this fluvial parade struck me uniquely different.I’ve been to a number of festivals around Philippines, read many more in books and the internet. I never knew or saw this Guinakit Festival, even in our history books. I was born and raised in Mindanao, but finding a distinctly Mindanaon heritage and tradition was difficult for me too until this time. It’s one different experience even for me, a frequent festival hopper. Now at least, I can “grab” one as mine too, with the indulgence of our muslim brothers of course.

Front view of a banca in a Guinakit

Perhaps, next year I can still see Guinakit Fluvial parade and the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival. Made me realize, there are so many other historical and cultural stories that never made it into my Mindanaon mindset yet. So, See you in the next Guinakit Fluvial Parade?

“Tell her too, I’m glad I did!”

Glad I did!

It’s not my first time in Cotabato City. But my last stay in this place wasn’t to give me a good glimpse of this city. Since then, my perception of Cotabato was all dependent and shaped by what media is sensationalizing about this place. Sadly though, it’s these same kind of news that put this iconic city in a bad light.

I needed a trip down this once fortress city to calm my curiosity. A trip about confronting negative perceptions about the place and its people, communing with cotabatenos and scouring the place for positives/potentials that might one day put back glory to the first and proud city of Kutang Bato.

So off I went to Cotabato City with Sox Bloggers. This trip won many firsts for me this time.

Here are some (Soon with links to individual posts):

Watched a theatrical play of Mamalu and Tabuwanay, brothers who were great tribal forefathers in Mindanao, their conversion to Islam by the arrival of Shariff Kabunsuan and the epic story of Mindanao Sultanates. It was prior to the start of this play that I heard and felt the most nationalistic Lupang Hinirang I’ve heard my entire life so far. And it was here in Cotabato City.

Saw my first ever fluvial parade, the colorful and unique Guinakit Fluvial Parade and Competition, which is part of the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival celebrations. Guess what, such huge and colorful boats are just really small boats ingeniously tied up together! Amazing!

Witnessed and saw with my own eyes, the last remaining artistic and manual method of forging Islamic metalwares, gongs and metal craft. “designed in wax, melted by fire and forged in the calm hands of an artist”.

Gazed at the grandiose “Grand Mosque“, perhaps the biggest in Asia and probably one of the best pieces of architecture we have here in the Philippines.

Ate at a Grand Kanduli- the traditional dining and hospitality shown by our muslim brothers to their guests and anyone they accept in their home.

Learned more of my newfound idol, Sultan Dipatuan Kudarat, a regional hero and unconquered ruler of three great sultanates of Mindanao during the Spanish colonization. The unveiling of Kudarat’s life size gold statue (in the area where he once ruled) recognized a one true regional hero most mindanaons can identify with. I’m a christian by the way, but knowing this fact made me feel I belong to a heritage I can identify with and say “this is the story of one great forefathers of this island”.

Last but not the least, gazing at an emerging business center of Cotabato City. Yes, Cotabato is unlike what all the news is telling us about. You have to be here to even say a bit of Cotabato!

So watch out for my posts and pictures! And…

Go, tell everyone I went to Cotabato City. Glad I did!

We also visited their famed mini museum, get wowed by the authentic anthropometric jars dating back to 300BC and get amazed byt the rare (and real) T’boli dresses and ornaments displayed inside this museum!

Visits to the Municipall Hall of Maitum, meeting Mayor Perret and her husband, the anthropometric jars at their mini museum..

What moved me though is seeing for the first time a Pawikan Sanctuary and releasing young “pawikans” along the beach. Largely symbolic, doing the act might help spread the awareness on the conservation efforts of this endangered specie. In all, only 3 out of 100 newly bred pawikans survive till maturity. So this pawikans need all the help everyone can offer.

Then the SEx Tourists went water tubing at Pangi River in Maitum. This unique water tubing fun on this river rapid never cease to amaze me. So does Manny Paquiao and the rest of my family who have been here not so long ago. You gotta do that water tube ride, again and again. This time though, I just took photos. My next ride will be sometime on my next visit here.

The next stop was a new discovery for us. IML ECO PARK, sits on top of mountain inBarangay Lumasal, Maasim town that has an astounding view of Saranggani’s beach side. The restaurant, bar, resort, swimming pool and firing range is a haven for the adventurous scenery hunters. And yes, they’ve got this zipline, going down the foot of another mountain. How cool is that? The place is owned by Mr. Jojo Lopez and Haydee Lopez and our busog lunch was graciously provided by Maasim Mayor Jose Zamorro. Of course I tried their zip, and is pretty amazing experience for newbies! You can view more of IML’s place here at their Facebook page.

Most of the afternoon we spent basking at Lemlunay Dive Resort at Barrio Tampuan, Brgy Kamanga, Maasim, Sarangani Province. I’ve been here once but this time, we went snorkeling in the nearby coral reefs. You don’t need to go further and you’ll see schools of fish in different colors and species. But if you do dive here, you’d probably see many more dazzling sea creatures! We stayed longer in their infinity pool, taking advantage of the warm soothing pool water and great scenery just in front of us. You can even stay the rest of the day (or night) here and just go relaxing!

The last leg of our Saranggani tour was another surprise and uncommon pit stop – Fort Kalinawan, a military camp. Nope, we didn’t do something bad or got marooned there at that fort. The gentlemen and women in uniform inside the camp just showed us how they win battles without firing a single shot.(Okay, I got that from Shin Tzu’s the art of War). Using a different kind arm, munition and tactics. That is, peace and community building. And they are turning their military camp into an eco tourism park! Yes, and I think it is quite right. You don’t need fortifications to build peace and invite friends. Build a peaceful and relaxing park. That’s what the men and women of 173rd IB is doing in Fort Kalinaw. And oh, they gave us rides over those monster tanks around the Fort! Cool!! Check our pic below. Yes, reminiscent of EDSA!

Our night was capped with a sumptuous dinner at Mei Lih Restaurant located inside Phela Grande Hotel, Magsaysay Avenue, General Santos city. What a relaxing way to dine! But relaxing does not include our stomachs especially with their stuffed cookies(with quail eggs and shripms) and shabu-shabu. Had one good dinner here! Thanks Mr. & Mrs. Charles & Helen Angderson!
